Same Ol', Same Ol' Commercial Fishing Mess, AGAIN!!!

Postby Jimbob » Fri Feb 04, 2011 6:07 pm

From NC Waterman:

Pictures taken from a helicopter... off the OBX! The dead discards from "different" NC's trawler fishery were, by the pilots description, in a 1 and 1/2 mile wide and 4 to 5 mile long string with additional fish already washed up on the beaches.

When is the destruction of our fisheries resources by unrestrained and irresponsible commercial fishermen going to end?

This has been all over other fishing boards and the media. As a result from public outcry over the Oregon Inlet WASTE - DMF did change the regs for commercial harvest from 50 fish per day to 2000 lbs per day (an attempt to prevent "high-grading")

Another issue that's bugging me - have you seen the proc issued earlier this week closing sea bass, grouper, etc? They've put a limit on sheepshead, triggerfish...even Amberjack. HUH?? Pretty soon it'll be illegal to harvest any damn fish...I just don't get it

The above pics were taken this week, AFTER the change in regulations. If anything, the waste is WORSE than before.

I believe the regulators are trying to regulate recreational fishing to only catch and release, while doing little to the comms...especially in NC. I've long held, and actually had commercial fishermen say, in writing, that they don't think you should be able to catch a fish to eat...that you must buy it from them.

You're kidding, right? When this week? I'm all over the fishing boards and I haven't heard about another incident...
If you're right, they should outright ban commercial fishing for stripers....

I doubt you'll have enough time in your senior year to document them all. Just do the worst ones.

Expect threats, intimidation, personal property destruction, and things of the sort. When you pry the lid off of a barrel of greedy rattlesnakes, they usually bite. You can't reason with these people.

First part of your project should be to grow thicker skin and prepare for a lot of resistance and ridicule. Good luck.

And remember... it's about the getting rid of destructve gear and having a positive attitude toward conservation, not the negatively affecting the lives lives & wellbeing of downeast families. Try not to make it personal. That is the mindset you have to get into before you start.

We have been talking about this in some of my biology classes at school. I would have thought that a poundage limit rather than a number of fish limit would have helped out a lot but I guess not. They need to cut WAY back on the commercial striped bass season, but I doubt that would stop this from happening again.

Been hearing some reports of radio traffic indicating that the last episode was intentional.
