Good evening folks, I know this is an extreme long shot but I am hoping someone can give me a little information. I will be visiting my in-laws in Purlear, NC for a week over thanksgiving. I am upset to be missing a week of duck season in South Florida, but was hoping to possibly hunt while I am in NC. In Florida, most of our management areas are permitted and allow a stand-by lottery drawing for the no show permis. I was wondering if any of the management areas operated in this manner, as I will not have a boat. I can bring a Jon boat or kayak, but minimal power. I have all equipment guns, waders, decoys etc. Just looking for a tip or two where I could waste some time chasing some birds. I don’t mind driving several hours for a small chance at a hunt. If anyone is ever interested in hunting anywhere in South Florida feel free to email me at
Thank you.

I am sorry to tell you that NC has no standby opportunities on its gameland draw hunts, except for Mattamuskeet, and the odds of getting a standby draw there are so poor that it would surely be a waste of a 6 hour + drive to try it. You will be a long way from any reliable quick duck hunting. And, unless you or one of your family knows somebody, the odds of a walk-in hunt are slim to none. I'm sure the area you will be in has a couple of ducks, but it's a prohibitive long shot at best to be able to scout any out...even if you can obtain the necessary permissions. I think you'd be better off enjoying the time with your family.
