Got a double with one shot yesterday!

Postby hillbillyboy » Fri Jan 29, 2010 12:05 pm

I gotta give a little background to this story first. We don't see many mallards around here so when we do its pretty exciting. I was feeding my neighbors cows for him Wednesday evening and his barn backs directly on to his pond. I saw some ripples in the pond only to look under the window in the barn to see a drake and hen mallard feeding and swimming around. It surprised me so I backed up as to not push them off the pond and I watched them swim out and around the pond for a little while. I decided that the next afternoon after i got out of school I'd try and harvest them if they were still on the pond. I got out of school at 12:15 yesterday, drove home to get my shotgun and waders. I drove around the corner to my neighbor's place (I have permission to hunt it) and suited up. I attached my camera mount and camcorder to my shotgun. As i walked in the barn i began to worry that the birds had left the area because i didnt see them. Then I got close to the window and saw them right below me on the edge of the pond. I decided to wait a few minutes and see if they would move. After 10 minutes or so they didnt really move at all so I cut the camera on, shot and got both with one shot. I used another shot to finish the hen because she was only peppered and i didnt want her to suffer as i walked around the barn to get to the pond and retrieve her. Long story short, i got 2 mallards with one shot on film and they tasted delicious that evening. :D

Long story short.......I think your neighbor is going to be p.o.'d when he gets home and finds out you killed his pet ducks.

they arent his pet ducks lol. I have been feeding his cows for the past week and these ducks just showed up the other night. The only thing he doesn't like me to shoot is the squirrels around the house because his wife feeds them.

Depending on what kind of feed is around for the cows, you might be considered hunting in a baited area.

You've obviously never baited 'em up with pelleted feed. 8)

Shooting em on the water, heh?
I prefer to shoot em on the wing. More of a challenge.

Water swatting is a pathetic excuse for duck hunting. How in the heck are you excited about shooting 2 ducks on the water with one shot. Hell, I bet I could shoot a limit of ducks on the water with one shot if I had **** for brains.

Get excited about shooting a double or even triple with one shot but don't pretend you've done something challenging.

Nothing wrong with a good waterswat. The object of hunting is to kill the opponent.

Congrats! Dont let all these snobs get you down man- I was under the impression that one of the reasons most of us hunt is to eat ducks. A dead duck is a dead duck. Flying or swimming they taste the same.

i was told that it's against regs to jump up birds, and i also heard about a guy getting a warning from a WO for banging an oar on his boat to jump birds up out of his spread.

I have no problem with shooting a duck on the water but it's not against the law ta jump shoot either. Rallying and jump shooting are totally different. To rally means to intentionally push birds toward another hunter with a boat under power.

No way is it illegal to walk up, or drift, or paddle, or row to jump ducks...just can't use motive power, including sail.

I have never seen ANYTHING in the regs about not making noise, and would tend to call BS on that one.
